Philanthropists, historic preservationists, and passionate film buffs, Deborah and Chuck Royce saved the Avon from the wrecking ball in 1999. After making the necessary repairs, the Royces opened the theater in 2004 as the non-profit Avon Theatre Film Center dedicated to showing the best new independent films, documentaries, foreign films & cult classics. After leading the Avon for twenty years, the Royces have passed the baton to new leadership, Susan Cullman and Arthur Selkowitz.

The Royces continue to be angels to the Avon and its mission. They have generously donated the building and land to the non-profit Avon Theatre and pledged $1 million towards the Avon reCreated Capital Campaign, an $8.5 million capital campaign to bring the storied Avon Theatre into the 21st century. As the only cinema in Fairfield County still showing independent films, documentaries, and special programs, it is essential we ensure the future of the Avon. A successful campaign will result in necessary repairs to the exterior, all new seating in the existing auditoriums, and the addition of an intimate 48-seat screening room, which will enhance the Avon’s ability to partner with other non-profits for special programs. The improvements will include enlarged and renovated restrooms and lifts to ensure the entire theater is fully accessible with more spacious reception and concession areas. This year’s event will help in bringing this storied project to life.
