If you love music, don't miss the Gathering of the Vibes. The annual music festival is getting ready to entertain the crowds again at Seaside Park, near the University of Bridgeport. The event pulls in some big names in the music industry, like Phil Lesh, The Black Crowes, The Roots, John Scofield, Blues Traveler and many, many others, but it also makes sure to include popular local bands that bring in a loyal following.
Aside from the music, the event has special events for children and teens. Over in the Kids Corner, younger children can enjoy painting on a community mural, listening to children's entertainers, face painting, costume making, doing arts and crafts, dancing with puppets or just relaxing and reading stories on a comfy couch. There's even an eighty-five-foot-high Ferris wheel! The puppet troupes perform each day and teach the kids about how they work.
As for teens, they can play games, get hair wraps, learn how to juggle, make a memory at the photo booth, take up t-shirt cutting classes, try short film making, contribute to the community art mural, and lots more. Teens will be able to jam with a bit of help from School of Rock Teen Vibes Stage, where they'll go over making music as well as handling production, sound and light from the Vibes production pros.
Kids Corner is open 9 a.m. to sundown. The Teen Scene, noon until 11 p.m.
Also, make time for Everyone's Drumming demonstration on the Main Concert Field. It's sure to get everyone, of every age, moving. And on Sunday, Andy the Music Man will get the kids up on stage for an irresistible musical performance.
Other highlights include BioBus, teaching the younger set about marine life; some energy-burning, make-friends-quick sports, like kickball, Capture the Flag, and bucket brigade; family yoga; duct tape wallets and purses (it'll be a hit, trust us!); martial arts workshops, movies at night; and so much, much more.
