Bluewater Dreams

A great garden can wrap a house in verdant dreams, especially when the garden comes first. Frederick Law Olmsted, who envisioned Central Park, designed this sunken garden on Bluewater Hill in the 1920s—half a century before the renovated Mediterranean-style stucco house went up on the 1.1-acre site.

Many of the original columns, paths, benches and plantings remain.

“A formal garden like this is extremely rare,” says listing agent Mary Palmieri Gai of the Higgins Group. “This is a part of Westport history, and a true treasure.”

Within walking distance of Compo Beach, the 3,674-square-foot house is on the market for $5 million.
