Paul Newman knew a lot about people, especially children. When his big, philanthropic heart yearned to give back, he thought of children facing life-threatening illnesses. He decided to give them a slice of good, old-fashioned, authentic childhood, no matter what. That’s how The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was founded—with compassion for children and their families, affording a camp experience for children with critical medical conditions.
On a crisp evening, friends and supporters of camp gathered at the Westport Country Playhouse for a celebratory benefit screening of Newman’s classic film The Sting. Academy Award-winning composer Marvin Hamlisch, who performed, noted about the actor/philanthropist, “He didn’t just dream about making the world a better place—he set his mind to it and did it.”
