Local gallery Abby Taylor Fine Art is merging with one of America’s oldest galleries, James Graham and Sons in New York. The new gallery, which will be called Taylor-Graham, is a significant pairing in the art world. Abby has long worked with the 150-year-old gallery, a destination for collectors and museums and also home to one of the country’s finest sculpture collections. Taylor-Graham will bring a big stable of artists together, creating more of an international presence. “Our clients have been impressed with the increase in contemporary and modern holdings we have,” says Abby. “People think of us as traditional and having nineteenth century, but we’re now recognized as having strong post-war to contemporary art.” In Greenwich Abby recently received the estate of Carl Holty, one of the pioneers of colorfield painting, and her gallery is home to Calders and many museum-quality pieces. As part of their new program, Taylor-Graham will shift from traditional, long exhibitions to more pop-up exhibits, both online and in the gallery. This month, the New York gallery will host Standing Tall featuring the works of Elizabeth Catlett, a hot name in American sculpture (MOMA just acquired one of her pieces). “You can see something different every time you’re here,” says Abby, who encourages people to browse and enjoy the Greenwich collection as well. “It’s like going to a museum without going to New York.”
