You've Been Framed

With our “Dream Big” issue, we enticed you to pack up your bags and get traveling. Plus, since the warm weather is (finally) upon us, chances are that you have some big events coming up. A wedding? A day at the beach with the kids? Time to break out the camera and capture those memories. Then, you’ll want to showcase your shots around the home.

Troy Amuso of Troy Fine Art Services is here to lend his expertise on how you should frame and display your shots. For art lovers, these tips are just as equally useful for you to show off your favorite masterpiece.

Frame

“Choose a frame suitable for the artwork, not the home furnishings because you can move and redecorate many times during the course of your life,” Troy advises. Especially for people who constantly redesign rooms, this tip will keep you from swapping out your frame every time you tweak your furnishings.

Plus, bigger isn’t always better. “Consider the scale and size of the frame moulding choices,” Troy says. “The frame should enhance the work and showcase it, not overwhelm it.”

Hang

Hanging a framed piece is, in itself, almost an art. If you don’t want to crane your next every time you peek at that family photo on the wall, break out the level and the tape measure. “Hang art at eye level,” Troy says. “Often, art in homes is hung too high, sometimes even too low.”

Light Up

Lighting is a dramatic way to enhance artwork and photography. “Frame-mounted picture lights often may not accurately light the artwork,” Troy warns. “They can draw attention to the fixture, more so than the artwork, if not correctly selected or mounted.” Instead, skip the frame-mounted lighting (even as minimal as it may be) and look up. “Ceiling installed lighting, specifically placed, is very effective,” he says.
