Inside Perspire Sauna Studio: Stamford’s New Destination for Infrared Sauna and Recovery

Ben and Nahoko Mesfin discovered a love of sauna culture while living in Sweden years ago. The practice became an important part of their lives. Inspired by the physical and mental benefits they experienced, and the speed at which they felt a notable difference, the two became hooked. After relocating to Stamford five years ago, the pair set out to share the joys of sauna with others in their community. In March, the Mesfin’s opened their own business, Perspire Sauna Studio, at 573 Newfield Avenue.

Perspire is a rapidly expanding infrared sauna franchise founded in 2010 by CEO Lee Braun. With over 200 awarded franchise licenses and more than 80 locations open nationwide, it is recognized as a leader in the wellness franchise sector.

“When it comes to overall well-being, this type of sauna experience allows you to exert the least amount of energy and still get the most mental and physical benefits,” says Ben.

At Perspire, the Mesfins strive to create a spa-like experience for guests. So, they provide private infrared sauna suites, each with customizable temperature settings, chromo (light) therapy setting, and in-suite entertainment including TVs. Within 10 to 20 minutes, detoxing begins and cellular health starts to improve, says Ben. Post-sauna contrast therapy is also available, with 45-degree cold rainfall showers that aid in full-body recovery. Halo therapy is another popular service at Perspire. Users receive 20-minute-long treatments with pharmaceutical-grade salt particles, which they breathe in to assist with relaxation and overall respiratory health.

Ben says each therapeutic modality has unique health benefits and that the more frequent the sauna visits, the more benefits are realized.

Infrared saunas have been growing in popularity in recent years, and they differ from traditional saunas. Rather than just sitting in a room with hot air, guests experience infrared light waves that penetrate the body at a deeper level, allowing for a decrease in inflammation, muscle tension, joint pain and stiffness.

Here, sweating doesn’t just feel good, it looks good too, says Ben. The increased blood flow that comes from an infrared session can leave skin looking fresher, younger and healthier. In addition, this type of therapy can help with weight-loss, improved sleep and better immune function. Most people, says Ben, find that they also feel less stress, depression and anxiety after a session.

“We want to bring something to the community that feels like a contribution,” says Ben, “and to serve our neighbors by providing what we see as a missing amenity.”
