Biking and Hiking in the Great Outdoors

The Town of Fairfield boasts numerous scenic expanses to hike and miles to bike. Whether you prefer a flat route or a mountainous challenge, Fairfield’s terrain won’t disappoint. Enjoy a rigorous course or a leisurely family hike/bike throughout our historic coastal New England town.

Sea Breezes

Jennings Beach, a publicly accessible (& wheel chair accessible) stretch of sandy beach, is Fairfield’s largest beach covering 27 acres, has a five star overall rating and guarantees a picturesque, shell collecting, stroll. A concession stand, bathroom facilities and a marina view are also on site – as will the soon to be built new playground in honor of a Newtown child. Dogs & horses are welcome March 31st – October 1st

The Fairfield Beach Road loop also offers a flat scenic trip with numerous different routes and distances. One run/bike suggestion (5.65 miles) can be found on www.mapmyrun.com and includes the course distance, printable mapped guides, a bookmark option, elevations, send to phone and create a course icons.

Ye Yacht Yard, Southport Harbor, offer a similar seaside route with a few added hills. Breathtaking views and nautical sights abound.

Woodlands

The Cascades at Lake Mohegan (301 Eastfield Drive) offers a beautiful dog friendly recreation area. These trails surround a lake and waterfall/creek on acreage donated by the G.E. Corporation. Waste bins are available for cleanup, BYOB (bring your own baggies). Lake Mohegan, 960 Morehouse Highway, also offers woodland hikes; take a refreshing swim (lifeguards on site) and enjoy a picnic in addition. The lake is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This park has been called ‘a paradise for dog walkers’. Tip: www.bringfido.com.

The Audubon Society Bird Craft Museum and Sanctuary, 314 Unquowa Road, offers six acres of walking trails as well as a Natural History Museum. The CT Audubon Society and Nature Center, 2325 Burr Street, has a lovely 155 acre Larsen Sanctuary which offers trails through wooded areas, circling ponds (and pond farm), a butterfly garden and wonderful bird watching opportunities.

Charitable Organization Events

Many charity events are held throughout the year in these scenic locations as well. For example a Bike the Beach/Hike the Beach event will be held at Jennings Beach September 22nd. 100% of funds raised from Bike the Beach 2013 will be used to benefit people with developmental disabilities. One can choose from well-marked rides of 10, 20, 45 or 62 miles or a 5k (3.1mi) fitness walk. www.bikethebeach.com.
