As part of the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum Lecture Series, “Defying Expectations: Independent American Women of the Early 1900s” David Dunlop will present, The Roots of American Women Modernists with Georgia O'Keeffe a lecture on October 17, 2012, 11 am at the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, 295 West Avenue in Norwalk.
In his talk at the LMMM, David Dunlop will explore the world of Georgia O’Keeffe and her adventure in painting, education, and community; a microcosm of a modernist woman's triumph of personal imagination over a sexist culture. Mr. Dunlop’s lecture will also discuss how the elevation of the artist to celebrity status marked a reason for excluding women from a role which had been more accessible to them, when artists were seen as skilled artisans and not talented celebrities.
David Dunlop is a renowned landscape painter, art historian, lecturer, teacher and national television host. He has been a lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and a host of a 13-part PBS television series, "Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop," where he took viewers from New England to Provence to explore the homes, studios and works of art of some of the most celebrated American and French impressionists of the 20th century.
A graduate of New York's Pratt Institute, Dunlop holds a Master of Fine Arts. His work is represented in more than 50 corporate collections including Aetna Insurance, Champion, Chemical Bank, Citibank, Colgate-Palmolive, Delta Airlines, Ernst & Young, Exxon, Fortune Brands, GE Capital, IBM, Merrill Lynch, Mobil Gas, NYNEX, PepsiCo, Reader’s Digest, Smith Barney as well as the U.S. State Department.
