One of the many joys of spring is the annual Secret Gardens Tour benefiting the New Canaan Nature Center. On June 8, some of the most spectacular properties in New Canaan will open to the public and serve as inspiration for those eager to sharpen their gardening shears. A highlight of the tour is a seven-acre residence on Canoe Hill Road, a Colonial Revival home (shown here) that’s been renovated by Austin Patterson Disston Architects of Southport.

It’s a showcase for cutting-edge sustainability with features such as a vegetable roof garden, greenhouse and wind turbines added to an eighteenth-century restored barn. “It was a pleasure and delight to work on such a comprehensive project with a clear focus on sustainability,” says McKee Patterson, who was the partner in charge of the project. His team included Diane Devore of Devore Associates, who did the landscaping. newcanaannature.org
