Home for the Summer

There seems to be a universal notion amongst all kids that there is no lamer species on the planet than one’s own parents. For some reason, parents are the last people kids want to hang out with, especially in the summer when there is no school but plenty of free time. It’s time to change that– the following 6 suggestions for family outings are guaranteed to show kids that their parents are actually fun to hang out with.

For parents with kids over 21:

  1. Neat- Coffee shop by day and swanky bar by night– the old Westport firehouse has been revamped and is the perfect spot to gather over decadent cocktails and good conversation. However, because the menu is short and limited we recommend going for appetizers and drinks.
  2. Bar Taco-  Got a hankering for a fresh margarita? Sip one while overlooking the Saugatuck River and catching up with the kids on the Bar Taco patio. Just be sure to order plenty of guac because it’ll goes fast!
  3. Painting with a Twist- Painting and happy hour have come together to create the ideal night out in cities throughout the US. Westport is no exception to this new trend and has its very own BYOB art studio, Painting with a Twist, located right on the Post Road. The studio provides the art instructions so the rest is easy– simply sip and stroke! Nothing says parent-child bonding like paintbrushes and bottle openers.

For parents with kids under 21:

  1. Smorgasburg- On Saturdays and Sundays from April to November, food lovers unite in Brooklyn, NY to taste the best dishes, desserts, and delicacies that local food vendors have to offer. Ever heard of a Ramen burger? What about a waffle cookie ice cream sandwich? Smorgasburg is a food flea market that has something for everyone– even the pickiest of young eaters who seem to only like chicken nuggets and pasta.
  2. Westport Farmers Market- Love food but don’t feel like venturing all the way to New York? Every Thursday from 10-2 the Westport farmers market takes place off Imperial Ave. Take the kids and make a day out of taste testing all sorts of fresh bites from nearby farms or simply buy a bunch of ingredients and cook together from the comfort of the house kitchen.
  3. Devil’s Den– Devil’s Den located in Weston/Redding is Connecticut’s largest continuous preserve and offers various trails that make for a great family hike. With unique plants, animals, and sights to see, a hike in Devil’s Den can unite parents and children as they revel in Connecticut’s natural beauty.
