Outdoor Dates

Darien Library

I like a two-fer, in terms of cultural time out: On fine days, it’s very nice to go to the Darien Library and visit one of the great exhibits—painting and installation art and more—on the lower floor. There are often sneak peeks at Manhattan galleries, including exhibitions at MOMA, and events. There is more at the library, of course, including a nice little café, but if you walk or drive on, enjoy some downtime in Tilley Pond Park. It’s not Darien’s largest space in terms of acreage (that’s Cherry Lawn), but it has wonderful spots to relax, whether near the walking paths or by the fountains in the gazebos. The water is very greenish and lovely, and at dusk, when the lamps come on, it is extremely pleasant.

Calf Pasture Beach

Want to visit a lighthouse for your date? (It’s out there in the sunlight!) Looking to bike around an important little Revolutionary War site? (Read the signs!) Like outdoor art? (“Eye of Odin” is the stuff.) At Calf Pasture Beach, you can do a lot of stuff you wouldn’t expect. If you like to walk, then stroll through nearby Shady Beach Park, where the varied trees have plaques with names on them—get a bit of arboreal info with your shady stroll. When the genuinely warmer weather hits, you can also enjoy the fountain in the pond nearby where rust-tipped blackbirds congregate. For that lighthouse visit (or a trip to an island), go to the dock near the Maritime Aquarium. Oh, and the Maritime Aquarium, by the way? That’s also a good idea…

Philip Johnson Glass House

New Canaan’s biggest, best draw (Silvermine comes close but it is technically in Norwalk…) is also a wondrous—and now, relatively easy to visit—place. Really, the wait list is much shorter than it used to be. And, the house itself is just part of the fun. There is a sculpture gallery, painting gallery, a study and “Ghost House” along with some truly breathtaking scenery. Ideal for strolling and really just get-to-know-you time, there is really no better way enjoy a day than visiting these green grounds. It’s a beautiful escape, one that you and your partner will never quite forget.
