Over the River and Through the Woods

How today’s grandparents are influencing the lives of the next generation

At my house, Thursdays are grandma day. My daughters know that come rain or shine, school or camp, birthday party or doctor’s appointment, grandma will be a part of it. And for the rest of the week, they eagerly anticipate her arrival like kids waiting for Santa a week before Christmas.

Thursday didn’t start out as a weekly family reunion. After my first daughter was born, I was offered a once-in-a-lifetime position as editor-in-chief of a regional magazine. I found a wonderful nanny who would work three days a week, and for the other two days, I looked to my daughter’s grandmothers. Both were willing and able.

My mother-in-law took the baby on Tuesdays, and my mother picked her up Wednesday evenings for a twenty-four-hour playdate. The situation was perfect. I went to work knowing Arielle was getting full-time attention and love everywhere she turned.
