The Bruce Museum is offering a unique driving tour of Connecticut as part of its new exhibition Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism. The Museum’s Guide by Cell Driving Tour has just been completed for the exhibition, and provides museum-goers with a guided driving tour, including a map, of scenes around Connecticut which are featured in some of the Impressionist paintings currently on view. This is a new foray into the Museum’s use of the Guide by Cell system – to use the system outside the walls of the Museum. The idea is to continue one’s experience beyond the exhibition, indeed beyond the Museum’s doors, into our local towns and villages to further the appreciation and understanding highlighted in this show that Connecticut was a birthplace of American Impressionism.
“Connecticut was an epicenter of American Impressionism around the turn of the 20th century,” according to the Museum’s Guide by Cell Driving Tour, “when artists began integrating the earlier French style into their own unique approach. Although the movement spread throughout the state, many of the proponents of American Impressionism could be found around the Greenwich area.”
The Guide explains that the driving tour complements the Bruce Museum’s Pasture to Pond: Connecticut Impressionism exhibition, and offers museum-goers an additional way to experience the exhibition’s beautiful subjects. The tour might even inspire you, the Guide suggests, to gain a new perspective on seemingly understated locations previously passed without a second thought.
The driving tour begins at the Bruce Museum and ends at Greenwich Point Park, highlighting five different locations over a distance of about 12 miles. Active driving time is approximately 30 minutes. The guide and map will be available in the gallery to exhibition participants, as well as on the Museum’s website at brucemuseum.org.
