Bookstore Weather

Five Fairfield County bookstores worth losing an October afternoon inside

There is a temperature at which buying a book stops feeling like shopping and starts feeling necessary. It is not freezing. You do not quite need a winter coat. But the sky is a little gray, the coffee is hot and suddenly spending $28 on a hardcover you know almost nothing about feels completely justified.

This is bookstore weather.

And while ordering exactly what you need online is efficient, efficiency is not the assignment here. The assignment is wandering in without a plan, reading the backs of seven books, getting talked into an eighth and leaving with something you had never heard of 20 minutes earlier.

Luckily, Fairfield County still has places for that.

DIANE’S BOOKS | GREENWICH

Diane’s Books has been a Greenwich fixture for decades, and it feels like the antidote to every algorithm currently trying to decide what you should read next.

The shop packs an enormous selection onto its shelves while still feeling like the kind of bookstore where asking for help is part of the experience.

This is where you go when you have no idea what you want.

Tell someone what you just finished. Tell them what you hated. Tell them you want something historical but not depressing, smart but not exhausting, good enough that you will ignore everyone in your house for two days.

A bookseller can work with that.

ATHENA BOOKS | OLD GREENWICH

Athena Books was built around the idea that a bookstore can still be a gathering place.

And it actually behaves like one.

The Sound Beach Avenue shop combines books for adults and children with gifts, author events and book clubs, giving it the feeling of somewhere you are meant to linger rather than simply grab what you came for and leave.

They also host book-club gatherings, which is dangerous information for anyone whose current book club has slowly transformed into eight people drinking wine and admitting nobody finished the book.

Perhaps retail supervision is exactly what the group needs.

BARRETT BOOKSTORE | DARIEN

Barrett is the heavyweight.

The independent bookstore in Darien’s Corbin District has enough fiction, history, cookbooks, memoir, poetry, art and children’s books to make “I’m just running in for one thing” a fairly unrealistic statement.

The tables get you first. Then the staff picks. Then suddenly a cookbook is involved even though you have never once made anything from the last cookbook you bought.

Do not fight it. This is what October is for.

ELM STREET BOOKS | NEW CANAAN

Elm Street Books occupies exactly the kind of location an independent bookstore should.

Right in downtown New Canaan, surrounded by coffee, restaurants and enough other shops to turn “I’m running in for a book” into most of an afternoon.

Inside, the store covers everything from new fiction and nonfiction to children’s books, but the best part is still the human recommendation. Ask.

Walking into a bookstore and admitting you do not know what to read next is one of the last situations where another person can simply hand you something, say “Trust me,” and potentially change your weekend.

WESTPORT BOOK SHOP | WESTPORT

Westport Book Shop offers something slightly different.

Most of what is on the shelves has already had another life. The nonprofit shop near the Westport Library carries gently used and collectible books alongside vintage records and other finds, which means you never quite know what is going to be there when you walk in.

That unpredictability is half the fun. You may find the novel you came for. You may leave with an old biography, a cookbook from 1974 and a record you suddenly feel strongly about owning. Better.

And because purchases support the organization’s work with the Westport Library, buying three books when you intended to buy one can technically be classified as civic engagement.

That is what we are telling ourselves.
