Cake for Apes

Mankind has brought a lot of pain to orangutans, our closest relatives in the animal kingdom. But a charity with its U.S. headquarters in Westport, International Animal Rescue, is proposing we all do something sweet for these endangered and endearing creatures. Cakes for Apes aims to get people baking for their friends, family and colleagues as a fun way of fundraising for IAR’s orangutan rescue and rehabilitation center in West Borneo.

Bestselling author and Westport resident Jane Green, who recently published Good Taste: Simple, Delicious Recipes for Family and Friends, is supporting the special fundraising campaign. Her lemon and almond tart recipe is among those donated by cake-baking celebrities to help get people started. She says: “International Animal Rescue is truly the last and only hope for orangutans in West Borneo, so it’s time to get baking and show your support!”

The countdown to Cakes for Apes is on, with the event itself taking place between April 23rd and 30th.

IAR President Alan Knight comments: While the threats facing orangutan populations are deadly serious, there’s no reason why efforts to support our work to save them shouldn’t involve a large dollop of fun. We’re so grateful to everyone who helps us raise awareness and funds—and with the orangutan now listed as Critically Endangered, we need all the help we can get to save the species from extinction. Our teams in Indonesia do incredible work rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing orangutans back into the wild, but we all know that none of this work would be possible without our fantastic fundraisers.”
