Don't Miss The Boat

So, you live on the Sound. Getting on the water is as simple as 1-2-3, right? Not quite. While the biggest threat posed for boat owners is the season, for those without a vessel, the topsy-turvy weather is just the beginning. Questions loom: is a boating license necessary? And what about equipment? For those looking to boat without the hassle, check out these three places that provide the leverage – from one-day boat rentals, to club events, physical rides and more.

Longshore Sailing School – One of the country’s first clubs to provide public access sailing programming, Longshore aims to make the sport feasible for all. With a fleet of more than 100 sailboats and kayaks, the school offers a vast array of equipment that’s easy to get your hands on. Been itching to step on a paddleboard? Longshore’s got a service for that, with rentals at $22 per hour. Canoes, lasers, bugs and hunters round out this collection, as do the more challenging Hobbies models. But you can also opt for something more formal. A friend of free reign, Longshore let’s you engineer your own private events, including kayaking polo matches, relay races and even Come as You Go parties (which allow you to reserve pre-rigged boats).

Cedar Point Yacht Club – While this privately owned yacht club, founded in 1887, reserves its main services to club members, Cedar Point does offer select events and programs to the public. You just have to research – and ask. For kids, the club’s Junior Sailing Program exists as an alternative to Longshore’s. Conversely, for adults, sporadic opportunities for education and recreation exist. Check out one of club’s Open Houses, for instance, which occur once or twice every summer. During these events, experienced members take visitors out for a spin on club vessels, bringing the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the water carefree. Hotdogs and hamburgers are also part of the deal, as we believe, making the event worthwhile alone.

Downunder – Coming after these two obvious first choices, including this retailer might seem a little random. So what gives? Turns out, this store not only bodes equipment but a host of recreational opportunities, as well. Good deal. Located in Saugatuck, Downunder uses the calm waters of the River to its advantage. Namely, the shop offers lessons (in kayaking, paddleboarding) to get feet wet, but also water-based meditation and fitness courses. Looking for a new workout? Why not try PaddleFit, which engages your core out on the water. For yogis, there’s Kaia yoga, which utilizes paddleboarding’s balance requisite. In addition, Downunder hosts a number of fun events, such as trips to Cocknoe island. For a listing, check out their event calendar here.
