1. Prove that you are married: Make sure you get a certified copy of your marriage license. It is very important that your certified copy has a raised seal which means that it is authentic. Typically after you file for your marriage license you will get additional copies but if not just call your town hall and they can walk you through the process.
2. Let’s talk Social Security: You can apply in person at your local Social Security office or mail the your documents to the nearest center. You will need a certified copy of your marriage license, a copy of your driver’s license or passport showing your previous name as well as a completed application for a Social Security card. 3. Drivers License: Prior to visiting the DMV or AAA for a new license your information with Social Security must be updated. You will need to bring your certified marriage license, your current drivers' license and name change request form. See the DMV website for more information »
4. Passport: An important note to brides is to not change your passport until after your honeymoon since you likely will have made your travel plans in your maiden name. Upon your return is when it is best to change to your married name to avoid any issues with identification at the airport or in customs.
5. Everything else: When you order additional certified copies of your marriage license be sure to get quite a few copies. Many times your mortgage company, utilities and credit card companies will require a copy. After you get back from your honeymoon sit down and write a list. Then draft a simple form letter stating your maiden name, address, and contact information. Include all the information that has changed and include your account numbers for each company and mail them off to the correct department for each of these companies. Many times you can find the correct address directly on each website.
