New Hobbies to Try This Summer

There’s something about mid-summer that begs for a shake-up. You’ve done your usual beach spots, flipped through your beach reads and you’re starting to wonder—what now? Instead of doom-scrolling or melting into your couch, try picking up a new hobby. These ideas range from active to artsy, indoors and out, low-commitment and high reward. Whether you want to learn something new, get a little messy or just make better small talk at parties, here’s what to try (and where to start).

Pasta Making

A crowd-pleaser for good reason. Whether it’s a hands-on class at Culinary Works in Stamford or an at-home kit from your favorite Italian deli, learning to make pasta from scratch is tactile, delicious and deeply satisfying. Bonus: you also have dinner!

Calligraphy & Hand Lettering

There’s something soothing about learning to write beautifully—especially if your daily handwriting looks like a doctor’s note. Local art centers like Silvermine in New Canaan or even online workshops can help you start slow and build a skill that makes every card, label or invitation feel next-level.

Pickleball

Still riding the wave of being the “it” sport of the decade, pickleball is easy to learn and incredibly social. Courts are popping up everywhere across Fairfield County or go to the monolith, Pickleball America in the Stamford Town Center—just bring a paddle and a sense of humor as you learn the difference between and dink and a donk.

Junk Journaling

A creative mix of scrapbooking, collage and good old journaling, this DIY hobby is trending on TikTok and fits perfectly into a lazy afternoon. Hit up local shops like Terrain in Westport for beautiful paper goods and ephemera to start with.

Photography

Dust off that DSLR (or just get a little more intentional with your phone) and explore your own town like a tourist. Try golden hour at Greenwich Point Park or the more industrial backdrops in Norwalk. Sign up for a beginner photography walk or challenge yourself to shoot one photo a day.

Language Learning with a Twist

Apps like Duolingo make it easy to start, but pairing your practice with themed movie nights, dinners out (think tapas or dim sum), or local language meetups makes it social and actually fun.

Mudlarking or Treasure Hunting (Day Trip!)

Not quite Fairfield County, but close enough for a weekend curiosity: Head to Mystic or nearby coastal spots and try your hand at mudlarking—aka scavenging for sea glass, pottery shards or other treasures hidden in plain sight. It’s part nature walk, part treasure hunt and a surprisingly mindful activity.

Floral Arranging

No green thumb required. Whether you’re clipping stems from your own garden or sourcing from the farmer’s market, try your hand at styling a centerpiece or making a bouquet just for fun. Places like Fresh Flower Bar in Fairfield often offer seasonal workshops.

Sketch & Sip (or Just Sketch)

You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy putting pencil to paper. Casual sketch nights—sometimes paired with wine—are often available at places like The Creative Cafe at HAYVN in Darien, or you can bring a notebook to a park and zone out drawing trees, people or whatever catches your eye.

Try a “Tourist in Your Own Town” Series

Make a list of your hometown’s museums, hidden trails, sculpture gardens or historical walking tours and try one each weekend. Bonus points if you take a photo and write a journal entry or sketch something from your visit.
