Five Saturdays. Five plans. Your Fairfield County October calendar is handled.
October has five Saturdays this year. This is both exciting and, frankly, a lot of responsibility. It is the one month when staying home on a beautiful Saturday creates the nagging suspicion that somewhere nearby there is cider being poured, a market happening and a very good dog walking around in a costume you are missing. So we made this easy. One local plan for every Saturday in October.
You may now stop sending “what should we do this weekend?” into the group chat.
OCTOBER 3: WESTOBERFEST | WESTPORT
Start the month with beer and a very strong seasonal pun. Westoberfest returns to downtown Westport on Saturday, October 3, taking over Sigrid Schultz Plaza and Elm Street for an afternoon of local and regional beer, food and live music. There is also the annual stein-holding competition for anyone who has spent the year wondering whether their very specific arm strength could finally earn them public recognition.
It is an easy first-Saturday-of-October plan: walk around downtown, try a few beers, find something to eat and stay outside while staying outside still feels pleasant.
First Saturday of October: used correctly.
OCTOBER 10: GO LOOK AT FALL PROPERLY | NEW CANAAN
By October 10, the landscape should be doing some of its best work. Grace Farms is hosting an Autumn Stroll that morning, taking visitors through the property to notice the smaller seasonal changes most of us usually walk straight past. Plants changing. Wildlife moving. Habitats shifting.
It is a guided walk rather than a full-day hiking expedition, which means you can appreciate nature without needing to pack three protein bars and tell somebody where you parked.
Stay afterward for lunch or tea. This is October. There are rules.
OCTOBER 17: FAIRFIELD HARVEST MARKET | FAIRFIELD
By the third Saturday, we should be operating at maximum fall. Fairfield’s Town Hall Green fills with local retailers, makers, small businesses and food vendors for the annual Harvest Market. There are giant pumpkins. There is local shopping. And there is a dog Halloween costume parade.
This means it is entirely possible to spend your Saturday browsing jewelry and home goods while somebody’s golden retriever walks past dressed as a UPS driver.
Why would you be anywhere else?
OCTOBER 24: HALLOWEEN WINDOW PAINTING | WESTPORT
The Saturday before Halloween belongs downtown. Westport’s annual Halloween Window Painting Contest gives local kids a section of participating storefront windows to transform with their own spooky artwork. Make a morning out of walking Main Street while everyone paints, grab lunch and come back later to see the finished windows. Then develop extremely strong opinions about which elementary schooler deserved “Most Original.”
It feels old-fashioned in exactly the right way.
OCTOBER 31: DO HALLOWEEN BEFORE DARK | FAIRFIELD
Halloween itself lands on a Saturday this year, which feels like something we should take advantage of. SHU Community Theatre is spending the afternoon with two movies responsible for a very large percentage of everything we now associate with classic horror: 1931’s Dracula and Frankenstein. See them both on a proper movie screen, leave before dark and still have the entire night ahead of you for costumes, candy, dinner or sitting on the porch judging trick-or-treaters purely on effort.
It is an impressively efficient Halloween.
