Postscript: Spring Blues

Photograph By Gary Caputi

At this time of year, Stamford fishermen are ready for the spring bite. Just off the city’s shoreline, Long Island Sound starts to churn with the arrival of hard-charging bluefish. Few anglers know these waters better than Capt. Jeff Northrop. A longtime Fairfield County fishing guide, Northrop helped introduce poling skiffs to the Northeast back in the 1980s, opening the region’s shallow-water fishery in new ways. He and his wife, Tomi (pictured here), regularly land rod-bending bluefish in the shallow waters near Stamford, a reminder of just how productive our local fishing grounds can be. May brings the first wave of migrating blues, while June delivers more consistent action. Look for these fish around tidal rips and fast-moving currents.
