Straight Up

So we asked ELISABETH HALFPAPP, cocreator of the Core Fusion techniques at Exhale how to keep walking (and sitting) tall in a workaday life that has most of us hunching over laptops and smartphones.

Here are her sage tips:

1 Mimic the overall Core Fusion Barre philosophy for aligned posture by keeping your ears over your shoulders, your shoulders over your hips and the bottom of your chin parallel to the floor. Try to radiate all of your movement from this ballet-inspired posture.

2 Make a habit of engaging your abdominal muscles up and in. This will allow you to stand and sit properly aligned throughout your hectic day.

3 Keep your desk computer at eye level. (You may need to prop the base to achieve proper height.)

4 If you hunch over your mobile device, remember to stretch your neck gently whenever you can to bring your ears back over your shoulders.

5 Do shoulder rolls throughout the day. Move them up, back and down again.

6 When sitting, avoid sinking into the lower back; try to do a natural lumbar curve by slightly arching that lower back.
