Drive: About 1 hour
Few places do summer quite like Mystic.
Watch the drawbridge lift for passing boats, browse the independent bookstores and boutiques, then make your way to Stonington Borough, where quiet streets, white picket fences and waterfront views feel straight out of a postcard.
Lunch options are endless, but seafood is non-negotiable. Order lobster rolls, oysters or fish tacos before ending the afternoon with homemade ice cream and a walk along the harbor.

If You Want a Little Bit of Everything…Newport, Rhode Island
Drive: About 2 hours
Somehow Newport never gets old.
Walk the Cliff Walk. Tour one of the Gilded Age mansions. Stop for lunch on Bowen’s Wharf, order a lobster roll and watch sailboats drift through the harbor before finishing the afternoon on Ocean Drive.
You could visit ten times and still discover something new.
If You’re Craving Small-Town Charm…
Essex, Connecticut
If Hallmark made a summer movie, it would probably film here.
Essex is filled with white churches, antique shops, sailboats and tree-lined streets that seem untouched by time. Grab lunch overlooking the Connecticut River, browse the local shops and don’t leave without stopping for ice cream before taking the scenic drive home.
It’s quiet in all the right ways.
If the Goal Is Simply to Relax…
Block Island, Rhode Island

Yes, it takes a little more planning.
Yes, it’s absolutely worth it.
Rent a bike or moped after stepping off the ferry and spend the day hopping between beaches, Mohegan Bluffs, the Southeast Lighthouse and downtown shops. Order seafood with an ocean view, grab homemade fudge before catching the ferry home and you’ll wonder why you don’t come every summer.
If You Love Farm Stands…
Litchfield Hills
Sometimes the destination isn’t a town at all.
Spend the day winding through the back roads of Litchfield County, stopping wherever catches your eye. Pick blueberries at March Farm, browse roadside farm stands, pick up fresh pies, flowers and peaches, then find a shady spot for an impromptu picnic.
If You Want a Picture-Perfect Main Street…
Chester, Connecticut
Tiny but mighty.
Chester packs art galleries, cafés, independent shops and one of the prettiest downtowns in the state into just a few walkable blocks. It’s the kind of place where you browse without looking at your watch and somehow end up staying all afternoon.
If you’re lucky enough to visit on market day, even better.
If You Don’t Want to Plan Anything…

8:00 a.m. Coffee to go.
9:30 a.m. Find water.
12:30 p.m. Order the lobster roll.
