Labor Day weekend has a funny way of making everyone act like summer still has plenty of time left. Then Tuesday rolls around, the backpacks come out and suddenly those restaurants, beaches and day trips you’ve been talking about since June become “maybe next year.”
Before we trade beach bags for football Sundays, here are a few ways to spend one last long weekend around Fairfield County.
Friday: Try Somewhere New
Kick things off in Riverside with Barnoodle, one of Fairfield County’s most talked-about openings of 2026. The Asian-inspired restaurant has quickly earned a following for its house-made ramen, Thai khao soi, hand rolls and inventive cocktails. If you’re looking for something more casual, NAYA on High Ridge Road in Stamford opened this summer with customizable Lebanese bowls, wraps and mezze that make for an easy start to the weekend.
Saturday: Waveny and a New Canaan Comeback
Start the afternoon at Waveny Park, where the sprawling lawn in front of Waveny House practically asks for a blanket and a picnic. Bring lunch, wander the wooded trails or let the kids burn off some energy before the back-to-school routine returns. It is a low-effort plan that still feels like a proper summer day out.
Later, head downtown to The South End Bar, which returned to New Canaan this spring in a smaller space on Elm Street. The new location brings back the neighborhood energy of the original South End with cocktails, familiar favorites and a more relaxed bar setting. Park first, dinner and drinks second. That feels much more like a Labor Day Saturday.
Saturday Night: Book the Reservation
If there’s one restaurant you’ve been meaning to try, make the reservation now. Café Silvium remains one of Stamford’s hardest tables to book for good reason, while Roots Ocean Prime in Darien continues to be one of the county’s standout newer dining destinations. Labor Day weekend has become one of those occasions when dinner stretches a little longer and nobody minds ordering dessert.
Sunday: Make It a Sweet Day
Sunday marks the final day of Fairfield Restaurant Week, making it the perfect excuse to visit a restaurant that’s been sitting on your list all summer. If you’re heading toward Westport afterward, stop by Sweet Lyfe, the new frozen yogurt and gelato shop that’s quickly become a local favorite. For dinner, Sushi Jin continues to be one of Westport’s most celebrated new restaurants, pairing creative sushi with an approachable atmosphere that works just as well for date night as it does for dinner with friends.
Monday: Keep It Easy
Spend the holiday wandering Darien before the long weekend comes to a close. Pick up handcrafted chocolates at DoChéri, the Parisian-inspired chocolatier that opened earlier this year, then grab dinner at Wonder, the newest addition to Post Road. With menus from more than 20 restaurant concepts under one roof, everyone can order exactly what they’re craving, making it an easy choice for families or groups before heading home.
Of course, Labor Day weekend doesn’t have to revolve around reservations. Walk Greenwich Point before the crowds arrive. Watch the boats drift through Southport Harbor. Take the scenic drive through Greenfield Hill or linger at Compo Beach until the sun disappears below the horizon. Sometimes the best plans are the ones that leave room to slow down.
Summer in Fairfield County never really ends all at once. It fades gradually, one beach day, patio dinner and sunset at a time. Labor Day weekend is simply your last reminder to enjoy it while it’s still here.
