Out of the Wilderness, Wilton Two Hundred Years of Home Rule

West of the Saugatuck River, and a day’s walk from the coast of Long Island Sound, there once was a storied area famed for fertility but still unsettled by the English. Only Native Americans coursed it by canoe or wended their way along its delicate footpaths. Part of a huge tract of land called Norwalk that Roger Ludlowe purchased from the Indians in 1640, this northern territory was a wilderness.
