Meet the uber-talented founder of Leventhal Bakery, Jess Leventhal, who has quickly amassed a cult following in just over a year. Here’s why. She has a doctorate from Columbia, holds a prestigious research position at Yale, has three kids, is a self-taught baker who also learned marketing and social media on her own, and is a one-woman operation from her cookie-scented kitchen in Westport. All that is impressive and true, AND her cookies and cakes are otherworldly.
How and when did you start Leventhal Bakery?
I started in March 2023 on a whim! I was a few months postpartum with my third child, craving a NYC-style chocolate chip cookie that I couldn’t find in our area, while also looking for an activity to do with my then two and three-year-olds. I shared with friends, and social media did the rest! The bakery has grown and evolved in ways I never imagined.
What are your most requested products?
The chocolate chip cookie is an obvious choice! Crisp on the outside, thick and gooey on the inside. It’s a classic. Mini cookie cakes are a big hit among kids and adults alike. They are perfect for small celebrations and gifts, with an infinite amount of ways to customize and get festive.
You are very engaged on social media. What have you discovered your customers want?
My customers love being part of this bakery’s growth, including my own personal journey to get here. Everything from the products I offer, to the packaging, to many of the creative ideas you’ve seen have been customer-driven.
The Chiplette is your newest item. We see her as the new hero product. You?
I love her too. It’s a cookie sandwich with nonpareils as delicious as it is playful. I see these as cake pop or mini cupcake alternatives. The packaging is sleek and perfect for grab-and-go or party favors.
Do you have plans for expansion?
Yes! I’m in the process of taking this from a licensed cottage bakery to commercial. My customers will dictate the rest.
