A blissful escape from her on-the-go life in New York and Los Angeles, entrepreneur Tracy Paul, shares about her love of Litchfield County
The area is simply so picturesque, a place that she’s proud to call home. Its rich history dates to the early 1700s. Judge Tapping Reeve created the first law school in the country there in 1784, and Litchfield is the birth-place of author-social activist Harriet Beecher Stowe. Her home, an 1840 Colonial-era farmhouse, is where celebrated American artist Austin Purves best known as a muralist, painter and sculptor once resided. She’s maintained the integrity of the architecture and grounds for future generations to appreciate as Paul has. When in Connecticut, these are a few of her favorite places, people and things.
My Neighbors
Litchfield has a community of wonderful, caring neighbors and friends for life and most especially the Katzin family. I consistently travel around the world, yet I always feel comfortably at home here.
The Great Outdoors
For serenity, I escape to Topsmead State Forest, formerly the summer estate of Miss Edith Morton Chase (where her gardens still bloom); White Memorial Conservation Center, a pristine nature sanctuary with an unprecedented walking path; or sprawling Bantam Lake for fishing, boating and kayaking adventures.
Boutiques
In Litchfield, I love the curated fashion at Oliphant and R. Derwin, where I also shop for my husband. In New Preston, I frequent Privet House and Pergola for fantastic home finds, and J. Seitz & Co. for gifts, furniture, fashion and more. Ideal Jewelers is also a big favorite. I love their vintage pieces. The finest in the area.
Dining
With friends and family, I frequent Village Restaurant, The Winvian, The Po Cafe, West Street Grill, The Pantry and The Mayflower Inn.
Top Stops
I recently discovered Jennifer Terzian Gallery, with its contemporary art treasures. The Hickory Stick Bookshop is unlike any other and has been a special place for me always. But my all-time favorite destination is the Colonial Revival-era Litchfield Post Office on South Street. Since I was a child, I have been enamored with the concept of mail and communications. Hence my lifetime profession!
Staycations
My go-to getaway for upscale dinners and pampering is the Winvian Farm in Morris. An unique experience, bar none.
Summer Events
I try to catch the weekly Music On the Green concerts in Washington to connect with faces new and old, while enjoying live music, and the Litchfield Hills Road Race in June, where runners of all ages from all over the world compete.
