When did I know that he was special?” asks Joan Moreau about her older son Brandon. “There were early clues. His motor skills didn’t develop normally. When I put him in a Jolly Jumper, he nearly strangled himself. He fell out of a swing. He never made a goal in soccer, and he got hit in the head by a baseball — twice in the same game.”

Joan remembers that Brandon was hyperactive. He regularly bumped into things and people. He was impatient and could never compromise. Brandon would rather be alone doing something he liked than with a friend doing something he thought was boring. As a result, he had a hard time making and keeping friends.
