As balmy breezes beckon us outdoors, the perfect beach book is as indispensable as suntan lotion and a relaxing recliner. Whether savored on a blanket near the shore or under a tree by the pool, the right book is a passport to summertime’s “great escape.”
“Reading is alive and well in the new millennium,” says Phebe Kirkham, head of the reference department at the New Canaan Library, where books — no doubt bound for beach bags, picnic baskets and back decks all over town — are “literally flying off the shelves.”
What to read is a delightful dilemma, and never more so than today with shelves of intriguing possibilities to consider. In search of summer-worthy literary indulgence, we went to the source. When asked for recommendations, nine local authors were temporarily speechless. Upon reflection, their favorites turned out to be as diverse as the books they write.
