A Musical Fusion

I had the opportunity of seeing the genesis of a new group The Requinte Trio. As the name implies, this is a refined, subtle and gentile collaboration; a sophisticated amalgam of Jazz sensibilities with Brazilian rhythms and it works beautifully. The trio is made up of the singer Janis Siegel, the pianist-arranger John DiMartino and the singer-percussionist Nanny Assis. Back in January I wrote of the magic these artists can produce “Mr. Assis has a soft, unassuming tenor that perfectly complements Ms. Siegel’s mezzo soprano. The two showed a vocal and stage chemistry that was palpable and the charmed the audience with their subtle harmonies and moving interplay.”

The Requinte Trio features the dual voices of Ms. Siegel and Mr. Assis as they weave sinewy harmonies over Mr. DiMartino’s arrangements. Mr. Assis’s Bahian roots create an undeniably authentic Brazilian feel and Ms. Siegel has mastered the sensuous inflections of the Portuguese to perfection, with the glue being Mr. DiMartino’s deft arrangements. Together they make for some very soulful, samba-inspired jazz the likes of which has not been heard since Getz and Gilberto. Find out more about this sensational group at Artist Share.
