Meg Young’s Love Letter to Westport

Dear Westport,

When I moved here after growing up in Maine, I left New York and ventured westward to chase my California dream. There I met my husband Brian, and together we welcomed two little rays of sunshine, our daughters, into our home.

Brian was hesitant to brave another New England winter, though, so we decided to explore a new home in California. We looked all the over the SoCal coast, from Santa Barbara to San Diego, but for one reason or another, nothing felt right. Yet, fate had its way, and after just two fleeting visits to Connecticut, we dove headfirst and chose Westport as our home.

We made a somewhat risky and impulsive move having spent only a small amount of time here. But as we approach our second anniversary in Westport, I couldn’t imagine a more idyllic place to live or raise a family.

As an entrepreneur in the home and design industry, I have a strong affinity for beauty in architecture and landscape. In every season, I revel in the beauty of my surroundings. From the fiery hues of autumn that ignite the town, to the pink and white blossoms that grace the trees in spring and the lush hydrangeas of summer, the scenery never ceases to enchant. The streets, lined with centuries-old homes and perfectly manicured lawns all framed by a breathtaking coastline, feel like something out of a storybook.

The coastline fills me with such joy, and I make it a point to get to the beach several times a week.Whether it’s taking a weekday run to the water or a quick drive, the beach is my sanctuary. Even on the chilliest of winter days, it’s a place where I find solace and peace.

The downtown, bustling yet intimate, is the heartbeat of the community. It’s big enough to feel exciting but small enough to not feel overwhelming or impersonal. Also, what a gift to live somewhere with such an amazing public education system for my children!

And let’s not forget the arts. While Broadway may be a train ride away, there’s nothing quite like the magic and intimacy of the Country Playhouse. This year alone, I had the privilege of attending performances by legendary actors Audra MacDonald and Bernadette Peters.

But perhaps Westport’s greatest gift is its people. If I could create a place of my dreams, it would be Westport. With its coastal charm, artistic flair and, most of all, incredible community, I am endlessly grateful to call this amazing town home.
