The first great moment of the new Westport Playhouse took place on a sunny day last April. Seventy-five construction workers were caught up in a dusty maelstrom of sawing and hammering as they raced to get the theater finished. The deadline was just weeks away and even the new seats were scattered flat on the Playhouse floor. Then something happened that made the bedlam stop with the suddenness of a hammer blow.
