Fashion Anchor

A landmark location for fashion has been restored and reopened as a flagship J. McLaughlin store, doubling the size of the retailer’s space in town. The new J. McLaughlin was originally a popular ladies shop called Vicki B. Taft in the 1950s. Today the space is filled with stylish clothing for women and men. Described as sophisticated prep, the collection blends whimsical patterns with very wearable fabrics such as the comfortable Catalina cloth, ideal for travel because it never wrinkles. Key pieces for this season include the cashmere poncho, Becca leggings, the ever-popular Grace dress. “Knit dressing is important for fall,” says Anne Randell, vice president of marketing, who points to long vests and sweaters with vegan-leather trim. “Skirts are also big this season.” The men’s section here has its own entry and a television tuned to ESPN. The shop is also a fun source for gifts like scarves, duff kits and novelty socks.
