After Famous Greek Kitchen’s face-lift a few years ago, this longtime favorite eatery in Byram has been drawing new diners and regulars with its modern space and a menu that continues to evolve, reflecting the talents of Chef Steve Karapides. The Culinary Institute of America grad and second-generation restaurant owner, who runs the place with his sisters. The family has some fun new offerings.
MONDAY NIGHTS
Wine is half price, which is enough of a draw for us; but Greek hospitality reigns all week, says Maria Katsaros, manager and Steve’s sister, who allows the wait staff to offer customers something “on the house” any night of the week. “It’s one of those unspoken things. Someone will say, ‘I’ve heard that the stuffed grape leaves are really good,’ and we’ll bring some out for them.”
TUESDAY NIGHTS
On Tuesday nights the family invites guests to enjoy complimentary appetizers in order to sample the chef’s latest creations. “It gives people a chance to get to know us,” says Maria.
HEALTH CONSCIOUS
Another upgrade: Chef Steve’s shift toward organic ingredients, such as the fish (try the phyllo-wrapped salmon) and meats. Much of Mediterranean cooking is naturally healthy. For instance, the nutrient-rich dandelion greens served as a side are said to have many health benefits; and in Greece, people drink tea made from the greens. Popular veggie-based dishes include the Horiatiki salad (a country-style Greek salad with cucumbers, tomato, peppers, olives and the best quality feta), zucchini cakes and falafel platter.
NEW ADDITIONS
In addition to gyros and souvlaki sandwiches, the lunch menu now counts lobster rolls and grilled chicken with avocado sandwiches among the options.
Those craving Greek comfort foods will appreciate FGK classics, such as warm baked feta with honey, amazing gorgonzola bread and pizza. For dessert, there’s gelato, sourced from La Finesse, and chocolate ganache cake from Black Forest Pastry. The chef makes his own baklava and a galaktobourko custard which, Maria says, is “off the chain.”
