Hot Setup

While exploring beautiful residences on the New Canaan Cares Kitchen & House Tour recently, we came across one space featuring sensational style for anyone with an appetite for a well-planned cooking and entertaining area. It’s the heart of a home designed by Rob Sanders Architects and constructed by TR Builders of New Canaan; Kathleen Hay Designs did the interiors.

One of the owners of the home—the husband—once aspired to be a chef, and his love of cooking inspired the main kitchen pictured here, as well as a prep kitchen that’s nearby but separated by a wall to keep clutter contained. In the main area, the design team created a restaurant vibe with ceruse oak floating shelves that beautifully flank the range.

We’re big fans of the neutral tones, which are anything but ho-hum. The Alpine White cabinets by Kountry Kraft and Caesarstone countertops in a ginger hue contribute to the sleek, modern feel of the room. There’s white oak flooring with a limed finish, too, which imparts a contemporary farmhouse feel that’s consistent with the home’s exterior style. So is the porcelain backsplash tile by Waker Zanger with wood-grain look that’s installed horizontally in a staggered band pattern. The pale palette is pure sophistication, although if the owners choose to introduce color, it will pop nicely.

Great details make this kitchen. We like the way the coffered ceiling adds architectural interest. The nailhead detail on the chairs introduces more cool metal into the space, and the light selection is just right, with clear glass pendants by Visual Comfort. Clean, crisp and classic, these finishing touches create a kitchen that will never go out of style.

The New Canaan Cares Kitchen & Home Tour is a popular annual event that benefits one of the town’s most beloved nonprofits as it raises money for youth and families, and offers services such as classroom and health instruction. If you missed the tour, it’s not too late to donate. Learn more about New Canaan Cares at
