Hot Time on the Beach

In a perfect suburban world, rich and middle-class would live side by side. Modest cottages would be nestled between mansions, and people from diverse stations in life — families and singles, professionals and blue-collar workers, students and retirees — would be free to swim in summer, walk or ride horses on the beach in winter and watch the sun go down beyond the Sound.

To the surprise of practically everyone, Fairfield Beach is that perfect little world. Of all places, it has become not only the most desirable section of town in which to live, but one of the hottest real estate markets in Fairfield County, with property prices skyrocketing and new construction booming.

“Beach-front properties everywhere on the coast are hot, but Fairfield is particularly desirable,” says Harriet Stone, president of the Fairfield Board of Realtors, and a real estate agent at William Pitt Sotheby’s International in town. “Right now we have a lot of New Yorkers coming into the area, and people coming up the line, starting in Greenwich,”

The draw, she and other brokers say, is the tranquility of living on the water, along with the beach lifestyle, the proximity to town, good schools and the train station, as well as the comparative affordability of land and houses.
