Do you know who’s behind those canine dreadlocks? If you regularly drive down North Benson Road, you’ve probably seen “the mop dogs.” Maybe you thought the duo were statues until they moved or maybe you stopped to say hello. As with any celeb, greetings on the street, photos ops, and questions are on-going events. You’re not the only one. These two pooches are attention-getters.

Names: Greer (female) is 10, Bedros (male) is 3
History: They’ve always lived in Fairfield. Greer was the 75th Bergamasco in the U.S.; now there are around 1,300.

Did you know? Greer and Bedros marched in the NYC Columbus Day parade in 2009 and were featured in the New York Post. Consequently, they were blogged about by Martha Stewart. They’ve also appeared on Channel 12’s Pet Talk

A dog-lovers’s guide to the year…
October 2 to March 31 Beaches
Dogs are allowed on the beaches but must be leashed, except Jennings Beach, where unleashed dogs are allowed. Dog owners should stay clear of the private beach property along the Fairfield public beaches. Town beaches are off limits to all animals from April 1 to October 1.
May 12 Vaccines
The Fairfield Animal Shelter will hold a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic at the Animal Shelter, 211 One Rod Highway, from 10 a.m. to noon.The cost is $20 (cash) per pet (all dogs on leashes and all cats in secure carriers). A three-year vaccine will be given if owners have proof of a previous rabies certificate; otherwise, only a one-year vaccine will be given. Anyone with a state-assistance card will receive one free rabies vaccine.
Year Around Dog Walking
Walk your dog at any of the abundant open spaces located at Lake Mohegan, Pine Creek, Mountain Laurel Road and Ash Creek. Use a leash until you are at least 100-feet down a designated path and walk no more than three dogs at a time. You must always use a leash in the Ash Creek open space area near South Benson Marina. Always clean up after your furry friend.
