Five Fairfield County after-school outings for the stretch of September when there is still too much daylight to go straight home.
4pm in September is its own little window of opportunity. School is out, dinner can wait and the sun is still hanging around long enough to make an ordinary weekday feel like something more. This is the hour for playgrounds, wandering paths, splitting fries on the way home and letting the kids stay outside until someone finally asks what time it is.
These five plans require almost no advance thinking. Pick a town, throw a change of clothes in the car and consider the afternoon handled.

COVE ISLAND PARK + JIANG | STAMFORD
September is bonus season at Cove Island Park. The beaches may no longer be the main event, but there is a mile-long walking path, a playground, wide lawns and Long Island Sound still sparkling in the background. Bring scooters or bikes and let everyone get the last of the school-day energy out near the water.
On the way home, make dinner the interesting part. Jiang opened on Summer Street in August with a sprawling Chinese menu that goes well beyond the usual takeout order. Soup dumplings, scallion pancakes, fried rice, lo mein and sesame chicken give cautious eaters somewhere to start, while the Hunan and Chongqing specialties leave plenty for the adults to explore.

BRUCE PARK + VAN LEEUWEN | GREENWICH
There is a reason Bruce Park works so well after school. The sprawling green space has ponds, walking paths, athletic fields and one of Greenwich’s most popular playgrounds, but it is close enough to downtown that the afternoon does not have to end there. The park even landed on USA Today’s list of the country’s top city parks in 2026.
Once everyone has sufficiently run themselves tired, head up Greenwich Avenue to Van Leeuwen. The scoop shop added something new just in time for the school year: frozen yogurt debuted at the Greenwich location in August, starting with flavors like tart, matcha, passion fruit and coconut. Ice cream still counts as an option, obviously. This is not a homework-first household today.

BALLARD PARK + RIKO’S PIZZA | RIDGEFIELD
Ballard Park sits right in the middle of Ridgefield, which makes it particularly useful when you want fresh air without committing to an actual hike. Let the kids run across the lawn, wander through the gardens and make one slow lap before walking Main Street.
Then there is pizza. Riko’s Pizza opened its Ridgefield location at 955 Ethan Allen Highway at the end of July, bringing its ultra-thin tavern-style pies, wings and signature Hot Oil Pizza to town. It is casual enough for the post-playground crowd and substantial enough to quietly solve dinner at the same time. Everybody wins, including the person who would otherwise be cooking at 6:15.

VETERANS PARK + TAC BURGER | NORWALK
The waterfront is still very much in play in September. Veterans Memorial Park and Marina stretches across 35 acres along Norwalk Harbor, with room to walk, bike, watch the boats and let the afternoon unfold without much structure.
When hunger inevitably takes over, drive up Westport Avenue to TAC Burger, one of Norwalk’s summer newcomers. The restaurant comes from Wave Hill Breads owner Tim Topi and takes the smashburger a little more seriously than necessary, in the best way. Burgers are built with a custom brisket, chuck and rib blend, then tucked into Wave Hill buns. There are tallow fries, onion rings, chicken and hot dogs for anyone unwilling to participate in the burger portion of the program.
SHERMAN TOWN GREEN + CATCH A HEALTHY HABIT | FAIRFIELD
Some afternoons call for almost nothing. Sherman Town Green puts you in the middle of downtown Fairfield, with space for kids to move around and enough nearby shops to turn a quick stop into a wander.
Then walk over to Catch A Healthy Habit Café, a Fairfield fixture that started a new chapter this summer after 17 years on Unquowa Road. Its new home on Sherman Street keeps the organic, plant-based menu locals know, with smoothies, juices, avocado toast and sweet treats that make a convincing case for the phrase “after-school snack.” The move puts it right in the middle of town, which makes this pairing almost suspiciously convenient.
