Green Gatherings

On the first Tuesday of every month, Green Drinks meets at The Shack in Fairfield for a trendy and eco-minded gathering. Green Drinks is mostly for people involved or concerned about environmental issues, but the organization’s main message is that anyone is welcome. Everyone is encouraged to bring a friend along, so there is always a different crowd. Such a diverse group of individuals makes for unique and thought-provoking interactions. Another leading quality of Green Drinks gatherings is its unstructured and informal vibe. It is an environment where members are encouraged to make friends and develop new ideas. Some attendees have found employment at the meetings and others have even put their matchmaking skills to use.

It all started with a man named Edwin Datschefski in 1989 when he and a few colleagues were out for drinks at a pub in North London. The group realized that some of their fellow peers at the bar were also having an eco-minded conversation. They pulled a few tables together and so began a movement. Now, it is a global organization with 309 chapters worldwide. In October 2007, Ms. Burns-DeMelo established the Fairfield County chapter.

Green Drinks of Fairfield had their latest meeting at The Shack on April 3rd. Meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of every month and are hosted by Daphne Dixon. At the most recent meeting there was a turnout of over 30 people from all over Fairfield County including Trumbull and New Canaan. The gathering featured GreenTowns, another network with similar eco-friendly goals. GreenTowns was created in order to connect people who support local sustainable initiatives. Both Green Drinks and GreenTowns encourage people to come together in order to discuss and inspire green initiatives. Topics of the night included Fairfield’s Earth Day Celebration, which will be held at the Fairfield Warde High School on April 28th, as well as information about “square-foot gardening.” Among the mingling and chatter, Stillpoint Massage was there to provide complimentary massages. You can stay informed about opportunities to make friends, spark lively discussion (and maybe even get a massage!) by checking the Fairfield Green Drinks Facebook page.
