Doing it Right the Second Time Around

Tying the knot the second time around means another chance at planning the wedding of your dreams. However, planning a second wedding can be challenging. Who do you invite? Do you throw a bridal shower? Is it okay to go big? These are all questions we asked expert wedding planner and owner of Stella Day Events, Kerri-Lynn Osini-Mulhearn.

What are the most common concerns brides and grooms have when planning their second wedding?

For couples getting remarried, the second time is not about impressing guests; it’s about two families blending together. Sometimes that can be tricky. Ultimately, the second wedding is usually a much more intimate and sophisticated ceremony. Typically, couples are paying for the wedding themselves and know exactly what they want. The day is really about presenting themselves for the first time as a couple.

Should couples make as big of a splash as their first wedding?

I would say the trend goes both ways. For brides or grooms that may have had a small wedding, the second time is a chance to plan the wedding of their dreams, while others prefer a more intimate ceremony with close friends and family. Ultimately, it’s up to what the couple really wants.

How should couples handle invitations, guest lists, etc.?

The guest list should include the people closest to the bride and groom and most important, family. Typically, the guest list doesn’t go over about 70 people. For invitations, keep it simple and keep the rehearsal dinner intimate with just family. It is important to note that typically, the second wedding does not include the lavish gift-giving of the first time. Most couples are more financially stable at this point, and if the guest list is somewhat the same, guests are not usually expected to give another large gift. Some couples even specifically say, "no gifts" on the invitation.

What’s your biggest piece of advice?

Just go into it with an open mind and open heart. When merging families there are a lot of changes, but keeping a great attitude will make your day more enjoyable. It’s your second chance — do it the way you want!

The second time around is not only a chance for the bride and groom to plan the wedding of their dreams, but it is also an opportunity to recognize the blending of two families in front of their nearest and dearest friends.
