Fans of soccer, sport and competition all know the 2014 World Cup in Brazil is finally upon us, and Stamford’s diverse and passionate community will join the global phenomenon as we all gather round thousands of TVs to witness the greatest tournament in all of sport. While the conservatively impassioned might enjoy a quiet afternoon at home with their posse of like-minded spectators, others seeking the “real experience” will meet fellow supporters downtown for a multi-cultural soup of titillation and trash talk.
The venue? Tigín Irish Pub is without doubt the football-fanatic’s nirvana. Tigín is the state’s only Official U.S. Soccer Bar and will display all 64 tournament matches on most every screen they’ve got. Not only that. The pub offers a World Cup menu every day of the competition, complete with “lunch and a pint” specials. It will host on-going match prediction tables, as well as sponsor a nationwide bracket contest with a grand prize of $1 million (My money’s on Germany). They accept reservations for groups of fans supporting their favorite country, though any U.S. devotees are likely to find plenty companions throughout the joint. The festivities kick off tonight at 4 p.m. with a launch party featuring host nation Brazil as they take on Croatia.
