New Canaan Darien Editor’s Letter: Drawn to Blue spaces

Experts say that being near a body of water can be beneficial to your overall health. The proximity of water promotes physical activity and general fitness. It relieves stress levels and anxiety. Basically, they say, being near the water makes you happier. Need proof? Just ask anyone who lives in Rowayton.

As I write this, Rowayton has just wrapped up two wildly popular events—Comedy Night and Porch Jam. The boats are in the water, the outdoor restaurants are bustling, the Friday Farmers Market is in full effect. The Beach Concert Series and Shakespeare on the Sound are about to kick off. Life is good!

I had spent time in Rowayton well before I moved to the area. Working at a yachting magazine, it’s your business to familiarize yourself with all the great coastal towns—especially ones with dock-and-dine restaurants. And while we decided to make New Canaan our home, we head to Rowayton whenever we need a fix of salt air. There is just something about the place that draws you in and keeps you coming back.

That’s precisely what happened to Jill Lukeman, co-owner of local hotspot Arden’s. You can read more about how Jill came to call Rowayton home after falling head over heels with this vibrant community by the Sound (“Destination Rowayton“).

Don’t get me wrong—the rest of us living in New Canaan and Darien have it pretty darn good. You need look no further than our “Best of the Gold Coast” feature. You’ll find many of our shops, services and restaurants were chosen as the best of the best. However, it may not surprise you to learn what town is home to the best outdoor seating and best seafood restaurant. It’s a lively little place, where the cool breeze and salt air leave you feeling a bit more relaxed and a lot happier than when you first arrived.
