That Swing Thing

Music floats from the 1845 Greek Revival a few blocks in from Main Street.

On this afternoon, with a bank of French doors open onto the front porch, it is Bach that is wafting from the CD player inside. But on any other day, visitors and passersby might as easily hear not just a score of American standards, but live renditions from the keys of a Steinway grand piano and the voice of Rondi Charleston.

The voice is telling, at once clear and smokey, moody and swinging, with great range, intelligence and passion. A nightclub singer with classical piano training, a Juilliard education, an operatic background, and a surprising mid-career stint on network news, Rondi manages to convey all these things on stage, and also at home.
